Ringing in the new year with, what else, socks!

Happy new year to everyone!  Here in Ottawa the day is bright and sunny and fairly cold.  Chickadees are all over the bird feeder by my window and the squirrels are cleaning up the seeds on the ground (and for once not fighting with each other).  The grouse is still finding things to eat in the crab apple.  There are deer and squirrel tracks all over the back deck.   It’s after 10 am and I’m still in my pyjamas…. I hope your day is as nice as this one.

The sock in the picture was designed for a man, and I think it’s got a classic look to it that even those guys who only ever want plain black socks would like.  It’s done in Farrow Rib, a multiple of three stitches (three plus one, if you’re knitting it flat rather than in the round).  I used Elann’s “Sock It To Me” — two balls of 210 m/50 gm superwash wool/nylon blend.  Pretty much any sock-weight yarn will do, of course.

Here’s the pattern, with my best wishes for a great 2009: Farrow Rib Socks download

    Dear Nicole,

Thanks so much for sharing your creativity!
love the sock patterns & will be trying the cozy one soon…hopefully with the Briggs & Little yarn I’ve been reading so much about. LOVE the colors of your dyed yarn.
your 2 snowscape paintings are so serene & remind me of growing up in NW Iowa.
the only thing I have to share with you now is all my best wishes for a
    Happy & prosperous 2009.

    hi nicole,
i stopped by for the socks, and found the cat mittens !!! i don’t wear mittens, i don’t know anyone over the age of 6 who wears mittens, and i don’t do colorwork….but i’m gonna make those mittens…. after i make the 2 gorgeous scarves you designed, because i know i’ll wear those right away. i wonder if it’s possible to frame mittens for hanging on a wall ?

Thanks for all the lovely comments! And Iris, I don’t wear mittens, either. Nor do I know anyone who does. But Jorid’s mittens *are* works of art, I think. In a frame on the wall, in a hand-crafted bowl or basket on the coffee table, draped artfully over a windowsill with a beautiful view behind them — I think I’d love them just about anywhere, actually. That’s assuming I have the skill to make them look like hers, of course! We shall see….
