What was I thinking…

A Sock of Hideousness

A Sock of Hideousness

…when I bought this yarn?  It’s Yarn Treehouse Melody, a 100% wool sock-weight yarn which I’ve used before and quite like.  However, this melange of icky green and over-cooked orange — I can only say that it must have been cheap, and it must have looked better in the photo I ordered it from.  It has marinated in the stash for quite some time, but hasn’t improved any, so I figured I might as well sigh deeply and make some socks out of it.  Luckily, I have a dye pot and I know how to use it.

The pattern of the socks I like quite a bit.  It’s a simple knit and purl design, and the socks are knit top-down with a heel flap and short-row heel.  Should you also have some less-than-lovely yarn, or even some very nice yarn, and wish to make them, here is the PDF pattern for The Socks of Hideousness.

I think they’re beautiful! I think the color looks like a wooded forest!

Great socks! Now the colors on the skein look great, however, it does look different when knitted up. I bought some sock yarn (expensive) once. It looked great all wound up, but looked yucky when knitted. I when them w/a pair of dark blue jeans & a dark brown sweater & they’re fine.

    Thanks for sharing your pattern!

Please don’t overdye them! The colors are lovely! Perhaps you’ll like the colors in spring or summer.

Sorry to disagree but I like both the colour and the pattern. Good-looking well knitted socks.

I think the color is nice, too. And, of course, the pattern is lovely. Thank you for sharing it.

You gotta change the name of this sock. I personally love the colors. It reminds me of the new leaves coming from the browns and oranges remaining from the previous fall foliage on trees.
Lovely sock and lovely yarn as well. Thanks for sharing.

My daughter would love those socks. She has red hair and looks great in the colors.

Thank you so much for sharing the pattern with us. It’s very generous of you. It’s a very pretty one.

I just found your blog and I’m enjoying it!

Your story reminds me of a skein of Bernat Sox that I bought when I wanted to learn how to knit socks. The yarn pooled so badly that it resembled cat hurl. It was acid green with pink and brown. Oh it was awful!!

The socks are lovely in workmanship and color…I would suspect they would look great with chinos and nubuck sandals or running shoes…and the yellow pattern is to die for. I had the same leg length thing just happen to me last month…don’t know whether I did or didn’t pull on the heel but somehow I had a similar discre pancy…a first for me…but it looks as though they my slouch a bit and it will not be noticed…except by you ;-)

They say one man’s trash is another’s treasure! And it looks like a lot of people would treasure your socks that you are trash(talking)ing!! I am not sure how really orange they are – but I like the color in the photos. But it is interesting to me – how you can never be sure how the yarn will look knit just by looking at the ball/skein! That is part of the fun of knitting! And especially knitting socks!

I’m not much of an “icky green and overcooked orange” fan, but I love the colors of your sock! So I’m joining the “don’t overdye them” club! Thanks for sharing.

Ideal socks for wearing while feeding & changing a baby, but I still like the colour. We will have to dig out our worst colours & have a competition, bet yours loses! Thanks for posting the pattern. I shall knit these next.

You can always overdye them….very simply done. I won’t knit with black yarn so make sons’ socks out of scraps of all kinds of sock yarns and then dye black….

The sock looks great! Maybe it was just meant to be socks. That way the color is kept private until you show them off!

  17. Posted February 17, 2009 at 11:02 am | Permalink

OMG, would you believe I bought the exact same yarn through Ebay? The color, when I actually received them, was best described as the color pea soup turns when you really shouldn’t eat it anymore. But I’ve been meaning to try out my new dye supplies anyway.

These are really nice! The colors aren’t bad either. I’ve printed the pattern for future use. Thanks!

    Good job of knitting!

Okay–right about now you’re wondering if you’re crazy, as all these people seem to love the color. Please let me say that I think these are gorgeous socks, but yes–the color is pretty gross! Again, great, great pattern, though. They will be stunning when overdyed…

I love the socks of hideousness and would wear them if I won them. If I decided I really didn’t like them, I would give them to a dear friend who lives in the southwest in winter and those are southwest colors.
    Number 113.

I like the socks! If I win the socks, I will wear them with my hiking boots when I hike in the Wichita Mountains! They are of a generous size and length…they would be perfect with my boots!

    I shall pick number 21!

    Thank you!

You are right, that color is hideous. Looks like cabbage water (which Charlie Buckets is SICK of having for dinner, LOL). I would throw those socks in a pot of Koolaid so fast it would make, er, them swim. LOL

    Beautiful pattern though…

I would dye them QUICK before they put up a fight, LOL! Great job otherwise!

Lovely pattern. The colors would be hideous on me (I’m at my best in deep, cool jewel tones), but I do know several people who look fabulous in muted oranges, greens, and browns. I hope you find someone who appreciates them!
